Healthcare workers today are facing extraordinary circumstances. The COVID-19 pandemic is adding stress to already strained healthcare systems. At HemoCue, we see the incredible efforts of healthcare workers firsthand. You show us the point of care each and every day. During this time, we want to make sure that you’re taking care of yourself. Below are 10 easy ways to care for your mental health and overall well-being.
1. Share your feelings. Talk with people about your job stress. Let your coworkers and supervisor know how your work is affecting you.
2. Self care is ok. You spend most of your life caring for others. Give yourself permission to take care of yourself. It’s not selfish, it’s necessary.
3. Let it go. You do a lot but you can’t do it all. And that’s fine. Identify things that are out of your control and don’t give attention.
4. Maintain a daily routine. Establishing a daily routine—when you wake up, eat, exercise, etc.—will help give you a greater sense of control.
5. Take a break. Whether it’s a five-minute walk or a weekend away, a change of scenery and pace is good for your mental health.
6. Eat healthy. Fueling your body with nutrient-rich foods will help your body and brain operate at its best.
7. Try some exercise. Regular exercise benefits your mind and body. Start simple, try stretching, walking or anything that is right for you.
8. Turn off the news. We are bombarded with a steady stream of news and updates all day. Shut it off for awhile. Take a break from social media and news feeds.
9. Practice mindfulness. Meditating and breathing exercises are easy ways to reduce anxiety and clear your minds.
10. Ask for help. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, please ask for help. Whether its supportive friends and coworker, or your human resources department, let someone know what you’re going through.
